Recommendations From A Friend

It’s that time again where I share some of my favourite pastimes. This is the stuff that I do some of, on most days, as a way to unplug and to take time for myself.

Reading: ‘The Heart’s Invisible Furies’ by John Boyne
What’s so great about it? The use of humour in such a dark book has me catching myself when I giggle. I cannot imagine the struggle it must have been to be born homosexual in Ireland in the 1940’s. This book is both eye opening and heart wrenching.

Listening: To the wind howling last week.
What’s so great about it? Pass.

Watching: A double bunger of ABC’s Australian Story about a mum who was framed for trafficking drugs from Cambodia.
What’s so great about it? I just felt so sad for her. She was totally conned and innocent – along with others. I wonder about the trusting nature of women who are vulnerable and how we can avoid this happening to others.

Tasting: Dishes with legumes – chickpeas, mung beans, split peas and the like.
What’s so great about it? This kind of slow cooking – soaking chickpeas and making a curry from scratch – is new to me. I’m feeling into my Indian heritage (of which I have none) but it’s very earthy and grounding.

Feeling: Optimistic.
What’s so great about it? I feel it in all of me, all the way down to my toes. It’s a wonderful way to be.

Smelling: Spices in the kitchen.
What’s so great about it? All of the curries have the same base – cumin, turmeric, cardamom, onion, garlic and ginger – so the house is smelling like a dream. Except that time I left the curry on and headed off to work, and Bill came home two hours later. That wasn’t such a great smell.

Doing: Some fantastic parenting.
What’s so great about it? I’m not sure where this patience is coming from but I like it! This whole family ship is sailing more smoothly and Lenny, Bill and I are loving each other sick.

Contemplating: Why the bloody dogs are barking so much at night.
What’s so great about it? Oh, that’s right, I am meant to think of an upside…I am at one with our dogs and I think I’ll invest in a dog coat or two next year. (I think they’re freezing and want to come inside.)

Following: My gut.
What’s so great about it? I have decided to cease my work at the boarding school – the late nights are a killer – and the possibilities of having these two nights back are making me giddy.

Fan girling: Billie Eilish
What’s so great about it? I can’t get enough of this girl. Her song ‘Bad Guy’ banging out in the kitchen was one of the week’s highlights. And this article in The New Yorker has a great take on her “That Eilish can seem both wildly troubled and genuinely laid-back, sometimes within a single verse?”

Learning: How to become a Social and Sacred Leader.
What’s so great about it? The community that I have formed so quickly in undertaking this online course has been amazing. I have developed a trust to speak about my desires and big plans and it feels like I am floating on a cloud today.
